Every now and then, one ought to behave in an ill-advised manner. Let me stress that I don’t mean partaking in the tired and obvious act of getting your drunk on. Nor do I mean necking with someone you shouldn’t in the nearest utility closet– that’s surprisingly easy. No. I want you to embrace true naughtiness by undertaking an elaborate baking procedure all on your own, preferably on a Friday evening which makes the activity all the more… strange. Then, I want you to eat all the results and tell no one. In fact, I want you to do this tonight.
This is the cake and here are the instructions. It’s a sculptural Yoda cake done in a style worthy of Ace of Cakes. Bake it and let Yoda guide you to true enlightenment.

How immensely satisfying is it when someone you like digs the same particular sort of writers, artists, or filmmakers you’re fanatic over? Oh, allow me to butt in and answer the question for you: it’s marvelous. It’s an absolutely stupendous situation to be in because it can be a rare sort of connection often times.
But it’s even better when that someone is, say, another one of those actual writers, artists, or filmmakers. (For example, I was ever so stoked when I learned Joss Whedon is so much a fanatic for Battlestar Galactica that he refuses to watch that beginning bit which previews the dramatic highlights of that particular episode. )
So I’ve decided to give myself sort of a mission. I’m going to poke through podcasts, articles, and interviews mentioning the various obsessions our favorite storytellers in film, TV, comics, and prose. Periodically, I’ll compile the obsessions of the storyteller and post them here. If you have suggestions about who you’d like to learn about, just let me know, and I’ll go hunting.
For now, here’s a short article about Brian K. Vaughan through the lens of some of his fans. And I mean hopped-up fans like Joss Whedon and Damon Lidelof.

I like to imagine having slumber parties with directors and screenwriters. I’ve done it an embarrassing amount. I’ve finger combed the hair of Alfonso Cuaron, dared Joss Whedon to stuff a whole jar of tahini in his mouth, and taken Albert Brooks freaking down with my awesome thumb war skills.
Del Toro has shown up quite a bit, too. After all, an auteur is only invited into one of my chum fest fantasies if they’re innovative and ambitious. And del Toro certainly fits the bill. In addition to helming The Hobbit I and II, 3993 (a Spanish ghost story), At the Mountains of Madness (based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft), he’s yearning to put together even more projects. Specifically, del Toro is intrigued by making a film about Dr. Strange. In an interview with Empire, he said he’d talked to Neil Gaiman about Dr. Strange:
“I said, that’s an interesting character because you can definitely make him more in the pulpy occult detective/magician mould and formula than was done in the Weird Tales, for example. And I certainly wouldn’t use the suit! [Dr Strange wears a get up that could be most politely described as ‘swishy’]. But the idea of a character that really dabbles in the occult in a way that’s not X-Filey, where the supernatural is taken for granted. That’s interesting.”
Oh, Guillermo, you are so getting an imaginary invitation from me.

Listen, there are things that make you sad in this life. Being stood-up at the alter, splattering bleach in your eyes, or that dang lonely daffodil in The Brave Little Toaster! But, once in awhile, there are things that make you happy. Sometimes they’re smaller than expected, but oh-so-powerful enough to combat the wobbling chin and leaky nose.
Check out this painstakingly precise ode in Lego to The Dark Knight trailer. Be less sad.
Or maybe save it for later, after your cat shows a subtle but marked preference for your roommate over you.
