MGM has acquired a spec script for “Executive VP, David M. Murch’s Adventures in the Land of Zametherea,” a “high-concept fantasy comedy” from the writers of “Freak Talks About Sex.” The story centers around David Murch, a child who goes to a magical world only to be committed after coming home and telling his parents about it. He grows up to be a cold executive who is called back to Zamatherea along with his son in order to save the world.
Am I crazy or is that more or less the plot of “Hook?” Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for fantasy epics, but the element of the kid being committed makes me think of that “Buffy” episode where she’s convinced that she’s in a mental institution and imagined her life as a vampire slayer. I’m also wondering when studios are going to put the kibosh on these long, goofy titles. If “The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus” flops as bad as “Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium,” then I’m predicting we’ll see this movie just released as “Zametherea.”
