Arthur C. Clarke, author of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and dozens of novels, short story collections and works of non-fiction has died at a hospital near his home in Sri Lanka. In addition to his creative achievements, he is generally credited with the introduction of the idea for communication satellites, an odd claim to fame he wrote about in a 1965 essay, “How I Lost a Billion Dollars in My Spare Time.” Knighted in 1998, Clarke was also a television commentator during several of the Apollo missions, and often said that he felt the “golden age” of space travel was just beginning.
