Now that we’re halfway through the run of Sarah Connor Chronicles here in the US, I thought I’d take a look back at what we’d seen so far and give some of my thoughts. I’m pleased to see that they haven’t resorted to the terminator-of-the-week tactic. That would’ve been too easy. What seems to me to be the biggest flaw so far has been the addition of Derek Reese as Kyle Reese’s brother. For me, it doesn’t work on a number of levels. I can almost suspend disbelief in the existence of a brother, but is it necessary to have him be Kyle Reese’s brother? Does that make him more worth saving than if he was just another resistance fighter from the future? My willingness to believe got a little smaller too, when Derek Reese happens to run into the man that created Skynet. There’s been a nuclear war. It’s already been stated in previous movies just how horrendous that war was, how few survivors there were and how sketchy the info on the Connors was. And yet the man that is the uncle of the father of the resistance, winds up in a holding cell with the man that created Skynet! Fate? Or just a *really* small world? I’m curious to see what will happen with Cameron. Obviously they’ve shown the whole “sometimes they go bad” portent, but I wonder if that’s a little too soon. What I loved about Buffy season two was how comfortable we all got with Angel before we realized what kind of a maniac Angelus was. It made it all the more worse. To me, it seems way too soon to play this card. Sarah barely trusts Cameron right now. In my opinion, this kind of turn to the dark side should take time. Hopefully this series will get that time to develop.
