The spirit of the movie seems like it will be painfully akin to its predecessor. But of course, Mary! It’s the second film. Yes, yes, I know, but check out the Harry Potter films, each one of them are tonally unique and try– some succeeding, some not–to re-imagine those ol’ hero’s journey tropes. The matter wouldn’t be as irritating as it is to me if it weren’t for the fact that The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe was such a let down. After having somehow capturing a sense of true wonder, the film lost it approximately thirty minutes into the film for a dull retread of filmic fantasy. It went tame. I won’t lie, I actually own the movie on DVD for those first thirty minutes (how can you deny the power of James McAvoy’s Mr. Tumnus or wee Georgie Henley’s Lucy?), so I’m positive I’ll be sitting in a theater seat late spring– but I won’t be jacked-up about it, mind you. I’ll just be there, hoping I can get a few more moments of wonder.
