While I remain dissappointed in The Golden Compass, the New York Times gave it a decent review, citing visual evocations in the film that hadn’t occured to me, including both David Lynch’s Dune and Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age. While I remain disappointed by what was brought to the screen narratively (I was mostly pleased visually although I thought the world looked a bit too clean, sparkling and modern), clearly I’m still marginally obsessed, since I went to yesterday to check out the toy line, which included $35 plush daemons, action figures, a plastic alethiometer and a wide range of games and puzzles including a card game and a dominoes set. Also there’s a giant armored Iorek Byrneson in the window that’s worth getting a look at if you’re in teh area.
