Justice League Casting

Vulture has an article up about how DC Comics in recent years has emphasized just how A-List the Justice League superheroes are and yet, because of budget restraints, the upcoming movie’s biggest star is Adam Brody playing Flash. The rapper Common will play Green Lantern but the majority of the remaining roles will be played by unknowns(for instance, Ain’t It Cool News reports Megan Gale, an Australian supermodel, will be playing Wonder Woman). The article was, I think, not just acknowledgment of the disparity between past expectations and the casting’s current reality, but also a kinda snort at the outcome. A short, derisive chuckle even, if you will.

I’m actually pretty indifferent to the prospect of this movie, myself. The chances for the Justice League actually seeming cool and not absolutely cheesy on film are high, I think. But I’m all for more flicks having unknowns in key roles. Who isn’t tired of knowing precisely the sort of roles this or that actor has done and what that means about his or her character in the current movie of the week? It can be grating for a cinema fiend like me. For instance, if I see James Marsden in a movie, chances are pretty good his character will not capture the heart of the movie’s heroine. The Notebook, X-Men, Superman Returns, Enchanted. With unknowns, obviously, you don’t have the gnawing feeling you know what their character’s going to amount to. Nevermind it’s also just plain refreshing watching a different actor’s unique facial expressions and ticks. Here’s to hoping that those helming Justice League will appreciate their newbies’ quirks and won’t be constantly wishing during the shoot that they got Jessica Biel or Jake Gyllenhaal.
