Steven Spielberg gets a lot of flack from people, for good or ill, but I want to shout out some praise for the man. According to reports, George Lucas wanted to shoot “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” on digital, and Spielberg flatly refused. This is one area where the two directors have frequently disagreed, where Lucas thinks the film industry should switch to digital photography, and Spielberg feels that film should remain the industry standard. I still can’t be sure how I feel about the subject, but I will say that I think “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull” should keep the look of the first three films. When it comes to franchise films, I think the philosophy of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” definitely applies.

I agree with Spielberg completely - Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan and Iron Man director Jon Favreau also feel the same way (and both Nolan & Favreau favor practical effects over CGI when possible). There was a fun article at Ain’t It Cool News about this where Spielberg affectionately pokes fun at Lucas, when talking about how they work together.
