TOY ROBOTS: Beyond Omnibot 2000

When I was a kid I was lucky enough to own a ridiculous amount of toy robots. I had a few transformers (read Dinobots and Ironhide), some Voltron stuff… an Orguss that my parents bought in China Town for me one year… but the coolest were the Tomy robots and their ilk. I only had the small ones, like Dustbot and Mr. Money, but they were the coolest things on the block back in 1984. Unless you were lucky enough to have Omnibot 2000 or better… you might remember this handsome devil from Rocky IV, Silver Spoons or Short Circuit. This guy had some of the best product placement of the 1980s if you were a little kid.

We’re trying to put together an episode of “The Mashup” all about toy robots, but until then I’m just going to have my voice-controlled R2-D2 bring me another drink and imagine what could’ve been…
