“Nip/Tuck” season five starts tonight, and I’m stoked. Yup, I admit that I am a fan of “Nip/Tuck,” and I’m writing about it on my sci-fi blog because I believe the show does have elements of speculative fiction to it. The last season was a high water mark in that regard since they had Rosie O’Donnel’s ear cells cultured with a mouse’s DNA so a new ear would grow out of the rodent and they could saw it off and attach it back to the original cell donor. It was weird and disturbing, but so was liposuction the first time a doctor mentioned the idea.
In a move that will either make or break the new season, McNamara/Troy has moved from Miami to Hollywood, which will open a new world of story ideas. Apparently in the new episode, in order to build their rep, the doctors take a job as consultants on a show within the show called “Hearts ‘n Scalpels,” which gives tons of story openings. Still sounds contrived, you say? What if we throw in Tia Carrere (where’s she been?), Craig Bierko (after an awesome run next to the Shat on “Boston Legal), and Oliver Platt?
Listen, I was certain that season 3 was as good as this show gets, but when “Nip/Tuck” set up shop in Hollywood at the end of the last season, I started wondering and guessing about what will happen next. They’ll never have the same addictive murder-mystery atmosphere that the Carver storyline created, but I think there’s a chance here for them to make the show interesting again. I guess tonight we’ll see.
